Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand. Jer. 18:6
Ceramics class will give you an opportunity to explore ceramic media and processes. You will learn basic skills in hand building, working on the potter's wheel and creating a variety of surface designs in clay. You will also participate in firing and learn some of the scientific and cultural aspects of ceramics.
Studying ceramics can help you learn things about God and creation:
Creation is God's artwork; He was the first creator.
Clay and glazes and the way they work are part of the miracle of the created order.
God has given you skills to use and enjoy:
God created man with the ability to produce and appreciate beauty.
God has given us gifts of creativity, skills and materials--and the ability to figure out how things work and to use them to produce new and beautiful things.
God created the world and everything in it, then looked at what he had created and enjoyed it--"it was good." Similarly, there is joy and satisfaction for us in creating and constructing things that we can appreciate, use and enjoy.
Ceramics: the art of making things using clay and treating them with fire. The word ceramics comes from the ancient Greek word keramos, which refers to clay and the objects that are created from it. Ceramics has its own special vocabulary--words that refer to clay and the tools, processes and techniques involved in its use.
